The International Media Seminar curriculum changes slightly from year to year. Schedules from previous years will give you an idea of what you might expect if you attend the seminar in March of 2008.

 9:00 - 10:00 AM   "The Media Scene in Russia and Eastern Europe." with Celestine Bohlen, Diplomatic Correspondent, Bloomberg News.  Long-time foreign correspondent in Moscow.with the New York Times and the Washington Post.

 

10:00 – 11:30 PM   “New Challenges and Old Values--21st Century News ”  Geraldine Baum, Staff writer for the Los Angeles Times for 17 years (and Medill graduate); and Michael Oreskes, Executive Editor, International Herald Tribune. Former Washington Bureau Chief and Metropolitan Editor (among other roles) at the New York Times.  

 

11:30—12:15 PM    Lunch at AUP.  With comments on "An African Media Outlook.” Diana Kasyoka and Asenath Okoth. Journalists at the Nation Media Group, Nairobi, Kenya.

 

12:15 - 1:15 PM   "Trans-Atlantic Perspectives: How Will American Relate to the New Europe?" William Pfaff. World affairs columnist for the International Herald Tribune and the Tribune World Service.

 

3:00- 4:30 PM   Visit to France Television Studio for a tour and presentation in English.

 

LATE AFTERNOON:  FREE TIME

 

6:00 - 7:30 PM:   “Head Scarves, Car Fires, and the Murder of Ilan Halimi: An American Perspective on Islam, Anti-Semitism, and the Lure of Xenophobia in France.”  A public lecture by Jim Gaines, former corporate editor of Time Inc. and chief editor of Time, Life, and People magazines.  Now an author living with his family in Paris, his next book uses the friendship of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette to explore the dynamic between the American and French Revolutions. 

 

 

Thursday, March 23

 

9:00 - 10:00 AM  " The New Electronic Media and Cross-Platform Programming." Eileen Bastianelli, Managing Director, CarpeDiem Creation, a French media company. Veteran producer and agent in the entertainment industries in Europe.

 

11:00 - 12:30 PM    *Visit to Libération, a leading French daily newspaper located in a unique building, where you will meet with François Sergent, former foreign correspondent in London and in the US, and long-time International Editor. "A Close Up  Look at a Leading French Daily."

11:30 - 12:30 PM  David Lawday, Author/journalist whom has had a distinguished career as a correspondent for the Economist in the US and Europe:  "Why the world is more affected by the French Revolution than the American one that came just before."

 

3.00 - 4:00 PM    *"The World's First Global Newspaper." At the International Herald Tribune (IHT).A talk and a tour, with Anne Bagamery, Senior editor.

 

Evening:  Optional cabaret dinner and show in Montmartre.

4:30 - 5:30:  “The French Political and Social Scene.”  Pascale Richard, Paris journalist and frequent contributor to Le Monde and Madame Figaro. Specialist in Franco-American issues.

7:45 - 9:00 PMHubert Vedrine:  French Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1997-2002. (in French with English translation. Questions in English).“The Changing Global Power Structure.”  As Secretary General of the President’s Office from 1991 to 1995, Mr. Vedrine was a close adviser to President Mitterrand before becoming Foreign Minister under President Chirac. He worked closely with President Clinton in organizing the conference in France which led to the end of the Kosovo War, but also wrote a popular and influential book warning of the danger of the US becoming a “hyper-power.”

7:00 PM:  Buffet dinner at the home of Lee and Berna Huebner.  US Representative Ellen Tauscher, a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Group will share a few words. Faisal Al Salem, Delegue Permanent of the State of Kuwait  to UNESCO will also speak briefly about the the Middle East.

Historian, (“agrégé and docteur”), "chercheur-associé” for IMEC (Institut Mémoires de l'Edition contemporaine.  Professor and Author of a recent book on the satirical French weekly publication, Le Canard Enchainé. “Media Freedom in France.”
