As a teacher of lighting design, Joseph Appelt is interested in experimenting with ideas and images and working with the director and design team prior to implementing them, especially in regards to nonproscenium staging. Appelt has designed in Chicago for The Goodman Theatre, Court Theatre, Northlight Theatre, Victory Gardens, and Pegasus Players. He has held the position of resident lighting designer at Missouri Repertory Theatre and the Kansas City Ballet. Other regional theater credits include productions for Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, Syracuse Stage, Studio Arena Theatre of Buffalo, the Great Lakes Theatre Festival in Cleveland and productions performed at the Spoleto Festival U.S.A. and in Tokyo, Japan.
