Daniel Ostling is a freelance scenic designer based in Chicago and NYC. He is an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago and works extensively with director Mary Zimmerman having designed numerous production including Lucia Di Lammermoor (2007 Metropolitan Opera Opening/ NYC) and Metamorphoses (nominated for a 2002 Tony Award-Best Scenic Design). Recent designs include Brainpeople (A.C.T./SF), The Glorious Ones (Lincoln Center/NYC, Pittsburgh Public Theatre), Argonautika (Berkeley Rep, Shakespeare Theatre/ DC, McCarter/ NJ, Lookingglass/Chgo). Mirror of the Invisible World (Goodman/Chgo), Lookingglass Alice (New Victory Theatre/NYC, Lookingglass/Chgo, McCarter/NJ, Arden /Philadelphia), Durango (Public Theatre/ NYC, Long Wharf/CN), the Pain and the Itch (Playwright's Horizon/ NYC, Steppenwolf/Chgo), UP (Oregon Shakespeare Festival), and Pericles (Goodman/Chgo, Shakespeare Theatre/DC).
Ostling has worked at numerous regional theatres including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Mark Taper Forum, Seattle Rep., Berkeley Rep., and Portland Center Stage among others. Other opera designs include Aindamar and Rage d'Amour (Tanglewood Music Festival, LA Philharmonic), Phillip Glass' Galileo Galilei (BAM/ NYC, Barbican/ London, Goodman/ Chgo), and Suor Angelica / Gianna Schicchi (San Francisco Opera Center). Internationally his work has been seen at the Donmar Warehouse in London (Pacific Overtures, 2004 Olivier Award- Best Musical), the Barbican in London and the Melbourne Theatre Company in Australia.
Upcoming projects include Amadeus (Chicago Shakespeare), Brothers Karamazov (Lookingglass/ Chgo), Arabian Nights (Berkeley Repertory/SF), Eurydice (Victory Gardens/Chgo), War Music (ACT, San Francisco), Sonnambula (Metropolitan Opera/ NYC), and Merry Widow (Lyric Opera/Chgo).
