Daniel Ostling is a freelance Scenic Designer based in Chicago and NYC. He is an ensemble member of Lookingglass Theatre Company in Chicago and works extensively with director Mary Zimmerman having designed numerous production including Sonnambula & Lucia Di Lammermoor (Metropolitan Opera / NYC) and Metamorphoses (nominated for a 2002 Tony Award-Best Scenic Design). Recent designs include: Merry Widow (Lyric Opera/ Chgo), Civil War Christmas (Huntington Theatre/ Boston), Having Our Say (McCarter), Up (Steppenwolf), Lookingglass Alice (Actor Theatre Louisville, Lookingglass, Broadway, McCarter), Arabian Nights (Berkeley Repertory, Lookingglass, KC Repertory), War Music (ACT/ San Francisco), Eurydice (Victory Gardens/ Chgo), Amadeus (Chicago Shakespeare), Brothers Karamazov (Lookingglass), Brainpeople (ACT/SF), The Glorious Ones (Lincoln Center/NYC), Durango (Public Theatre/NYC, Long Wharf/New Haven), the Pain and the Itch (Playwright’s Horizon/NYC).
He has worked at numerous regional theatres including the Brooklyn Academy of Music, New York Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, Mark Taper Forum, Seattle Rep., Berkeley Rep., Goodman, Shakespeare Theater/D.C., and Portland Center Stage among others. His opera designs have been seen at the Metropolitan Opera NYC, The Lyric Opera Chicago, Tanglewood Music Festival, LA Philharmonic, BAM, Barbican/ London, and San Francisco Opera Center. Internationally his work has been seen at the Donmar Warehouse in London (Pacific Overtures, 2004 Olivier Award- Best Musical), the Barbican in London and the Melbourne Theatre Company in Australia.
