University's Career Services Database:
The University's Career Services department also has a database of internships through Monstertrak. You need to register for this service, and then you can search the internship offerings and even submit a resume on-line when you are ready to apply. The listing contains positions all over the country and in many different fields. The search function allows you to specify particular cities or industries or job titles.
Your Network:
Plenty of internships exist but are not publicized—instead, they are shared through personal contacts to other trusted individuals. Make sure that people in your network know that you are pursuing an internship opportunity. Tell them what kinds of internships you are interested in, and ask for advice on landing such an internship. If someone in your network shares a contact with you, don’t hesitate in using that contact; often, internships are acquired based on who you know. Don’t be afraid to seek the help of others in this process.
Organizational Websites:
If you are interested in a specific company or organization, check out their website. Often internship information can be found under the “Careers,” “Contact Us,” or “Volunteer” sections. If you don’t see an internship offered, you can always contact the HR department to inquire.
School of Communication Staff:
If you still feel tentative about the internship process, and would like some guidance, you can always contact your advisor and schedule a meeting to discuss opportunities he or she may be aware of. Additionally, the EPICS staff is always available to meet individually with students regarding the internship process.
