Frequently Asked Questions

Can I suggest a tournament, even though I'm not the director?
The best thing to do is contact someone affiliated with the tournament and either have that person submit an application or ask to submit one on their behalf. Unfortunately we will not be able to follow up on suggested tournaments that are emailed to us. Any application found to be submitted without the approval of the tournament director will be discarded without response.
I don't have all of the past data or tabulation results for which the application asks.
Unfortunately all information is required -- and must be accurate -- for us to consider your tournament, including the tabulation records. If you are the tournament director, you should have all of this information available.
Our tournament is new this year, and thus we have no past results to report. Can we still apply?
It is unlikely that we will select a new tournament as a qualifier, simply because it hasn't had an opportunity to establish itself in the same way as existing tournaments. If you wish to apply however, please submit the application with projected entry data for the upcoming year (this is the only case where projected data is allowed). Choose "email" for the tabulation option, and then follow up with an email explaining your situation. Be sure to express why your tournament should be a qualifier, particularly in relation to already established tournaments in your area.
Why is the comments section limited to 500 characters?
To make it easier on us (and you!), we don't really need the life story of your tournament. In fact, most of our decisions will be based on objective data and geographic location anyway. The comments area is simply reserved for anything out of the ordinary that we should take into consideration.
I already submitted my application but need to change the way I'm submitting last year's tabulation records.
That's quite alright; we forgive you. Just send an email to qualifiers@tocextemp.com and let us know. Then you may either (a) email the records to the same address; (b) fax them to Ric Roe, TOC Extemp, at 847-467-1171; (c) send them to Cori Ellis - TOC Extemp, 1815 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, IL 60208. The important thing is that we need last year's tab records, in some form, before processing your application.
When will we know if our tournament is accepted?
In order to make our decisions as fair as possible, we will not make any determinations until after the qualifier application process has ended. All tournaments will be notified individually of their status in mid-August, and a final list of qualifiers will be released to the community in mid-September.
How will you ultimately determine the qualifiers?
All of the information on the application, supported by the tabulation records, will be used to determine the best geographic spread of qualifying tournaments that will provide the majority of extempers a fair means to qualify for the TOC.
