Photos and More: The SOC Inaugurates "NU in Qatar" over Spring Break

April 14, 2009

The opening of an important chapter in the history of Northwestern began March 23 when a contingent of School of Communication faculty, staff, and students were among nearly 80 travelers to Doha for the official opening of Northwestern University in Qatar. A joint venture between the SoC and Medill School of Journalism, "NU-Q" began offering degree programs in communication and journalism last August in Education City, an area of Doha that hosts campuses for five other top American universities.

The establishment of Northwestern's programs in Doha has been guided by the leadership of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned and supported by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Research, and Community Development, whose board she chairs. The School of Communication's program — with curricular offerings in areas of communication theory, history, and industries and media technologies and practices — leads to a Bachelor of Science in Communication degree with a major in Media Industries and Technologies.

Her Highness and other representatives from the Qatar Foundation attended the lush inauguration ceremony they sponsored, which featured remarks by several Northwestern officials including Barbara O'Keefe, Dean of the School of Communication. The presentation also featured a musical revue performed by six students from the Evanston campus, along with videos highlighting the work of SoC students on both sides of the world. Throughout the thee-day journey to Doha, tours of many local landmarks were offered, ranging from the Fanar Islamic Center and Museum of Islamic Art to the Souk Waqif marketplace and a scenic sunset cruise along the Arabian Gulf. The festivities culminated in faculty presentations and spirited interactions with Qatar students on the Education City campus.
