WNUR Named Best College Radio Station

December 08, 2008

Northwestern's very own WNUR, 89.3 FM, continues to enjoy its status as the nation's largest student-run radio station, under the administrative auspices of the School of Communication. And just recently, it was voted "Best College Radio Station" by both the editorial staff and the readership of Newcity, as part of the magazine's " Best of Chicago 2008" edition.

Newcity calls WNUR "the city's most respected, not only for its continual rock-solid programming but also its star-studded alumni, which includes members of Arcade Fire, Steve Albini, Derrick Carter, and Ira Glass."

In the "Audience Choice" category, one reader commented that "89.3 is one of the only stations on the dial that plays a healthy amount of electronic music, much needed in this indie-rock-centric town."

These recent honors add to the station's past accolades, such as Spin magazine naming WNUR the "top college station in the U.S." in 2003, and Details magazine naming it the "No. 1 radio station in Chicago" in 1991.

A non-commercial radio station, WNUR first hit the airwaves in 1950, when it was broadcast out of the basement of Annie May Swift Hall. In March of 2007, WNUR moved into brand-new studio facilities in John J. Louis Hall.

WNUR participation is open to all Northwestern students, and all programming decisions are made by students. Additionally, WNUR features the only student-staffed radio sports department to call Big Ten games.
