Master of Arts in Learning Disabilities

The Master of Arts in Learning Disabilities will prepare you to address language and learning issues in school-age children, adolescents, and adults who are underachieving relative to their cognitive ability. Most graduates of this program work in schools, clinics, community agencies, and private practice.

Our curriculum integrates academic theory and research with hands-on clinical practice. You’ll study normal and atypical learning and development. Course work covers all major areas of cognition and achievement, including oral language, reading, writing, mathematics, and nonverbal behavior.

Our nationally prominent faculty members actively investigate both scientific and clinical questions in learning disabilities and related disorders. You will gain extensive clinical experience in diagnostics and remediation at the Northwestern University Learning Clinic on the Evanston campus. If you are seeking certification, you’ll be placed in a student teaching position at a nearby school.

You may also choose to pursue a combined degree in learning disabilities and speech-language pathology. We offer the only combined degree in learning disabilities and speech and language pathology in the nation. This program prepares you to work in schools, community settings and private practice with students encountering primary issues of both language and learning.
