Major in Communication Studies

As an undergraduate in Communication Studies, you’ll study the theory and strategy behind effective communication as you learn to lead and mobilize others with clear, persuasive messages. You’ll explore the many ways in which communication builds connections between individuals, groups of individuals and organizations.

Our noted faculty will broaden your views on global communication and technology and hone your ability to think critically. With them, you’ll analyze the tools and techniques of effective communication.

You may choose to specialize in one or two of the following areas:

Organizational Communication: Study the communication processes that address the challenges of change management, image building and cultural diversity within public and private organizations.

Communication Industries and Technologies: Examine the strategies and effectiveness of mass communication and the role that technology plays in shaping interpersonal and group interactions.

Rhetoric, Media, and Public Culture: Learn to use language and image, with a focus on mass media, to confront controversies and create forums for debate.

Relational Communication: Analyze relationships and how variables such as gender and culture affect interpersonal communication.

Media and Politics: Apply strategies of political persuasion in mass media for effective, innovative campaigns.

Argumentation and Advocacy: Learn to think about positions critically, plan strategies effectively, and argue cases forcefully.

An undergraduate degree in Communication Studies can lead to jobs or graduate degrees in:
