School of Communication

"In my opinion, there is no better place in the world to study writing for film and television than Northwestern. The environment is creative, supportive, and ideally removed from the insular worlds of Los Angeles and New York. What popular entertainment needs most is writers who bring unique perspectives to their work, which is what Northwestern's Writing Program helps its students develop."

Eric Bernt, Alumnus & Screenwriter (Virtuosity and Romeo Must Die)

Northwestern offers...

At Northwestern, we approach art in extraordinary ways.

Cross-departmental interaction and collaborations among faculty and students offer fertile ground for inspiration and expression. Our school is an incubator for new and original work, and home to some of the country's most exciting new theatre productions in our American Music Theatre Project.

Northwestern is the place you'll find synergy between departments and across disciplines, where workshops involving writers and performers, producers and musicians, can often result in remarkable new productions like Frank Galati's Long Gay Book and Mary Zimmerman's 11 Rooms of Proust.

Whether you feel most comfortable on a stage or typing on a keyboard, Northwestern can show you new ways to bring your art to life.

Chicago has...

In Chicago, you’ll find the new capital of original theatre production. From the Lookingglass Theatre, founded by Northwestern alum David Schwimmer, to the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, also founded by alumna Barbara Gaines, vibrant new works are always in production. You’ll get hands-on experience working with one of Chicago’s critically acclaimed theatre companies, Remy Bumppo.

Founded in 1996, Remy Bumppo Theatre has staged intimate, intelligent theatre attempting to explore the moral and ethical complexities of the human condition for nearly a decade. The company has established itself throughout metropolitan Chicago, winning critical praise ("a reason to rejoice," said the Chicago Tribune; "one of the city’s ... most golden theatrical enterprises," said the Chicago Sun-Times), as well as many awards.
