Website will go live on Friday, June 19 at 11:00 am (CDT):  convocation.soc.northwestern.edu

On this website, you will have the opportunity to view the livestream of the University-wide commencement ceremony at 11:00 am (CDT), as well as features of all SoC convocations, including remarks from Dean Barbara O’Keefe and remarks from our convocation speaker,  April McClain-Delaney. New this year, there will be individual graduate pages, an original musical piece created by SoC students, and a celebration video with pictures featuring the Class of 2020, as well as alumni well wishes.

The University-wide commencement will be live at 11 a.m. and last approximately one hour. The School of Communication virtual convocation can be viewed at your convenience, as all of the content will be available on the website until August 31, 2020.

We look forward to welcoming the 2020 graduates back to campus in person next June to continue the celebration!

Dear School of Communication graduating seniors,

By now you’ve had some time to process the changes to University Commencement and Convocation ceremonies outlined in President Schapiro’s May 1 message to graduates. While we cannot replicate an in-person Convocation, the School of Communication faculty and staff have consulted with a number of your peers and are working to design a virtual recognition experience that will contain many of the programmatic details you’d expect of an in-person convocation—and be memorable in its own right.

We will launch the virtual convocation site on June 19 following the University’s 11 a.m. broadcast of addresses by Northwestern President Morton O. Schapiro and 2020 commencement speaker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. You will be able to share this site with loved ones and it will remain on the website for a period of time following the commencement as an archive of your achievements.

Soon we will be sending each of a you an email to collect some information that we will use to populate the site with your accomplishments, if you’re interested in participating. Be on the lookout for that email.

The School of Communication Convocation is a joyous event that brings students, friends, families, faculty, and staff together to celebrate our accomplishments. While I am disappointed that I will not have the opportunity to greet graduates onstage this year, know that we remain proud of your outstanding achievements and the indelible mark you’ve made on our community. These times may be unprecedented, but we are confident that the exciting path you charted at Northwestern will be the blueprint we all follow to secure a just, principled, and creatively fulfilling future.

Please visit the University Commencement site for the most up-to-date details and developments related to celebrations for the class of 2020.

Sincerely,
Barbara J. O’Keefe
Dean of the School of Communication
